Mediterranean Sustainable Ocean Tourism Industry Resilience
OACM is finally launching the most advanced and innovative multilateral program for the tourism industry to enhance and strengthen competitiveness in the Mediterranean region. The programme will consist of three major segments: economic, environmental and social. It will set a focus on the most fundamental tourism industry service that is aligned with today's climate change and environmental issues that cause damage to biodiversity and human health. The objective is to ensure the tourists are vacating in Mediterranean Certified SAFE Marine Areas (plastic and marine debris-free areas beneath and above the water surface). OACM has included in the MED-SORTIR programme more than 40 ministries in 10 countries (France, Italy, Greece, Croatia, Malta, Cyprus, Albania, Turkey, Montenegro and Spain). The programme will eventually expand to other nations in 2026, focusing on continental water tourism.
OACM will, with governments, certify beaches and marine areas that will be maintained during the entire year and promote this CSMA (Certified SAFE Marine Areas) through the world's first multilateral digital communication platform, the GEPN (Digital Environment Promotion Network). These monitors will be installed in domestic and international airports in which nations will promote each other's tourism sectors. The system will physically reduce pollution in the Mediterranean and generate economic growth through better competitiveness in the international tourism market. The programme is aligned with more than 4 UN SDGs and will create new job opportunities for local residents while preserving marine cultural heritage.
